About New gTLD
Until now the Internet has been restricted to 21 gTLDs (.com, .net etc.), and with the exception of country and regional TLDs, new domain extensions could only be applied for during ICANN application rounds and were subject to official screening.
In June 2008 the Board of ICANN, the organization that coordinates the Internet's addressing system, approved a recommendation overhauling the rules for introducing TLDs.Under the new gTLD introduction rules, the existing process is relaxed, paving the way for new gTLD introductions. Organizations that establish registry businesses will be able to launch new gLTDs.

- Applicants will be able to apply for new ASCII and non-ASCII (IDN) gTLDs. All applicants and character strings will be evaluated by ICANN.

- Evaluation Criteria

- Character String
- The string must be more than 3 letters or characters
- Applications for character strings that are considered geographical names must be accompanied by documentation of support or non-objection from relevant governments or public authorities.
- The evaluation will also determine whether multiple applications for similar or identical strings have been submitted. (that no or (c) strings proposed by other applicants in the same round.
(In cases where applications are received for identical or similar gTLD strings, the successful applicant will be determined by comparative evaluation or auction.)

- User registration fee to access ICANN's TLD Application System: 100USD
- Evaluation Fee: 185,000USD

- A fixed fee of 6,250USD per calendar quarter (25,000 USD per year)
- A transaction fee of 0.25 USD on all domain registrations and renewals once 50,000 domains are registered.
